How Proscar Became Propecia

In 1992, the FDA approved Proscar, Merck & Company’s promising new medication to treat benign enlarged prostate, an often-painful condition plaguing millions of American men over 50 years old. Proscar treatment defines Benign prostate enlargement or BPH as a condition where the prostate becomes enlarged. The Proscar treated condition is caused primarily by a build up of a hormone in men called Dihydrotestosterone or DHT. DHT begins to build up in men as they age . The studies revealed that Propecia, or 1 mg of finasteride was the proper dosage to treat hair loss as opposed to 5 mg used in Proscar.

Propecia became an instant blockbuster and has sold hundreds of millions of units worldwide. Now many companies, small and large, quality and sub-standard produce and market generic Propecia.
